Winter is the perfect time to cuddle up with your pup and watch the snow fall. But the winter season also comes with its own set of challenges. And one of those is keeping your dog safe from the cold weather.
It can be easy to let your guard down in the winter months, especially if you live in an area where there isn’t much snow or ice. But if you’re not careful, your pet can end up sick or injured because of the cold weather.
Here are some tips for keeping your dog safe this winter:
- Use a heavy coat. If you live in an area where it snows, make sure that your dog has a warm coat on at all times. This will help protect him from the cold and keep him from getting chilled.
- Check the weather forecast before taking your dog outside so you know what kind of coat he needs and make sure he has a soft bed indoors where he can sleep if things get too chilly out there.
- Keep their nails short. Nails are less likely to break if kept short during the colder months. It’s possible you’ll need to trim them more often. Nails need to be trimmed more often in the winter since dogs are less active.
- Give him plenty of water. The colder temperatures can cause your dog’s body temperature to drop, so make sure that he always has access to fresh water. You can also give him ice cubes or frozen treats as part of his meal if he seems particularly thirsty or hungry.
- Keep him indoors during very bad weather. If there’s no way around it, bring your dog inside during severe weather conditions so that he doesn’t get hurt outside by slipping on icy sidewalks or in other ways.
- Make sure they have plenty of exercise and playtime outside, even if it’s just in your backyard or front lawn. Just be sure to warm up first!
