Tea and coffee, one rivalry that traveled through time and space, proving that whether you’re a coffee or tea lover, you’re still winning.
We’ve compiled a list of everything you should know about tea and coffee, including some great health benefits.
Antioxidants: the Superheroes
Did you know that tea and coffee are so great because they contain antioxidant-rich polyphenols with anti-inflammatory benefits? And that’s not all (we’ve told you, everyone is a winner here)!
For example, tea has been linked more with lower risks of heart disease and cancer, along with a boosted immune system. Some of the best types are black tea and green tea.
But, how about coffee?
Coffee, too, is filled with antioxidants and is associated with lowered risk of Parkinson’s disease, scarring of the liver, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.
What do scientists say?
According to studies, coffee is rich in some antioxidants dubbed polyphenols and hydrocinnamic acids, among others. These antioxidants can highly neutralize free radicals, fighting off oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. How great is that?
Antioxidants = Longevity Boost
Thanks to the tea and coffee’s antioxidants, you can age healthily because these compounds seem to be responsible for lengthening lifespan.
People in Blue Zones, the world’s regions where it’s normal to be over 100 years old and in good health, drink tea daily. That’s fantastic!
They Help the Digestion
Caffeine makes your intestine contract, which is why coffee makes you poop. Both tea and coffee are considered some of the best stimulants of acid production in your stomach. And that works best if you drink them on an empty stomach.
That may cause stomach discomfort, but it can also highly stimulate your digestion.
Keri Gans, MS, RDN, explains:
“If you experience these symptoms on an empty stomach, try to see if there is a difference when you have food. If symptoms continue even with food, you may try and purchase a lower-acid coffee or tea brand.”
TIP: you can always try decaf coffee for the same delicious taste and essential nutrients.
