The Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on our daily lives. Many children had to study online; some experienced losing a parent or grandparent, while others suffered severe symptoms due to the infection. Physical suffering is not the only one our children have been experiencing. Experts talk about the raised depression and anxiety levels in young people due to the pandemic.
One in four adolescents worldwide suffer from depression
The recent statistics found that one in four adolescents is battling depression, and one in five struggles with anxiety. The study analysed the global prevalence of anxiety and depression levels during Covid in children and adolescents. Children and Adolescents have been suffering from mental illnesses due to social isolation, financial problems in their families and long periods without formal schooling.
More than 80,000 young people worldwide participate in the study
To reach the worrying statistics, the study’s authors investigated the prevalence of depression and anxiety in more than 80,000 children and adolescents. The research subjects had different ages, the youngest age being four while the oldest being 17. The study used empirical clinical data from research centres worldwide, including Eat Asia, Europe, South America, the Middle East and North America.
Youth mental health was already declining
The bad news is that youth mental health was already declining due to the modern age’s stressful lifestyles. Back in 2019, one in three high school students experiences sadness and hopelessness. Once the Covid-19 pandemic arrived, the negative feelings increased.
The lack of social interaction and the long periods without formal schooling has created a surge in depression and anxiety levels in children worldwide. Other contributing factors are the disruption of daily habits and routines, the general feeling of uncertainty and the loss of family members and friends.
