Create a Home that Feels Like You

Whether you are redecorating your bedroom, your living room, your kitchen, your bathroom, or some other room, you probably need a lot of help. Asking for help is one of the hardest things any of us does.

But do it.

Here are some things that will make you happier and more comfortable:

1. Figure out your style
Start by asking yourself, “What is my style?”. Then ask for help. To find your style, read magazines, websites and blogs, and look through books. (If you are shy, try looking at books in the “design” section of a library.) Start by enlarging and copying photos of rooms you like.

2. Know what you DON’T like
Make a list of the things you don’t like. For example, you may not like the dark or busy patterns you see in magazines or the same kind of furniture you see in other people’s houses. Don’t get hooked on any one thing.

3. Mix it up
Don’t just copy one style. Mix patterns, styles, and finishes. For example, use plain wood furniture with patterned fabrics, and patterned fabrics with plain wooden furniture.

4. Use color
The colors you pick depend on your “style”. But colors help you set the tone for your room. Choose colors that make you happy. Remember, though, that color is not the most important thing.

5. Don’t worry too much about the price
Most of us are on a budget. But don’t be cheap about buying the right thing. Don’t buy the cheapest thing. It will only show.

6. Adapt your house to your lifestyle

Decorating your home should not just be about buying things you like. It should also be about designing your home to suit your lifestyle. A casual look is often more appropriate for a relaxed lifestyle; a formal look is often more appropriate for a formal lifestyle.

7. Have fun
Redecorating is a chance to express yourself. It’s fun!
