Physical activity is one of the best habits to implement in our children’s lives. As our world became technological and modern, and adults have less free time to play with their children, childhood obesity levels have surged, and it is time to put an end to it. According to CDC statistics, the obesity levels in the U.S for children under 19 years old is 19.3%. To help children stay fit and ensure they are healthy, children need to stay active and enjoy physical activity.
Understanding the benefits of physical activity
As parents, it is our responsibility to make sure our children understand why physical activity is essential and its benefits. Some of the health benefits are stronger muscles, bones, heart and lungs, better coordination and balance, lower risk for diabetes, cancer, and heart diseases. Also, active children tend to sleep better, be more relaxed, and be sociable. When our children understand all the benefits, it is easier to determine them to stay active.
Preach by example
Sometimes we tend to tell our children how great something is, but we do not do that activity ourselves. To help our children, it is a great idea to give them our personal example. Doing moderate physical activities as parents will help our children see the benefits and understand it is important. Busy parents can also try to practice or take the same sports lessons as their children. For example, some parents take swimming classes together with their child; others might consider Zumba or just taking a stroll around the neighbourhood. Taking children to organised sports events is also great because it might make them want to become professional athletes as well, and it is a great way to spend quality time together.
