Weight-Loss Device That Locks The Jaw Shut Sparks Controversy On Social Media

Experts have designed a device that locks teeth in order to help people lose weight. It uses magnets that will stop a person from eating freely.

According to the researchers, the device is installed on the upper and lower teeth. It will allow only a two millimeters opening to ingest liquids, breathing, and speaking when in lock mode. I don’t know about you, but this sounds scary to me. Here is more information on this topic:

A form of torture?

Some people believe the dental device to be some sort of torture mechanism. However, researchers have a different opinion.

Experts from the University of Otago in New Zealand say the device is not for the general public but to combat global obesity. The world-first weight loss device will only be used for medical needs, such as controlling diabetes. Some medical interventions require losing weight quickly, and the new dental device can help with that.

Trial

Like any new device, DentalSlim Diet Control was on trial. Participants have lost about 6.36kg in two weeks. Plus, they are happy to continue the trial.

“The main barrier for people for successful weight loss is compliance and this helps them establish new habits, allowing them to comply with a low-calorie diet for a period of time. It really kick-starts the process,”

says lead researcher, University of Otago Health Sciences Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Brunton.

Conclusion

The new dental device is also an alternative to costly surgical procedures. Besides the practical, safe, and affordable side, this device can be equipped by a dentist and easily removed in case of an emergency.

“The fact is, there are no adverse consequences with this device,” says the professor.

This device can help people change their habits and therefore solve the cause, not just the effect. Would you use it?
